Carl Schuler: the founding chairman of the Arlberg Ski Club
The first chairman, Carl Schuler (1851–1917), was a visionary pioneer of tourism in the Arlberg region. At the time the Arlberg Railway was being built, he had taken over the postmaster’s post in St. Anton am Arlberg from his father.
He skilfully exploited the opportunities for tourism development presented by the opening of the railway line for the benefit of his businesses. He had the existing Gasthof Post enlarged and, in the mid-1890s, also had the modern Hotel Post built, which was equipped with the
highest possible standard of comfort for the time. The hotel, which was extensively extended during the interwar period by his son Walter Schuler according to plans by the architect Clemens Holzmeister, played a special role on many occasions in the history of the Arlberg Ski Club. The youngest founding member was Carl Schuler’s son Rudolf Josef Schuler (1890–1914), who was ten years old at the time. He was one of the first soldiers from St. Anton am Arlberg to be reported missing in the early months of the First World War.
A memorial in the park near the old railway station and the Carl-Schuler-Weg in St. Anton now commemorate the important tourism pioneer Carl Schuler.
